Physical, mental and dental screenings and exams are completed in the required time frames following admission for both adult and juvenile populations. The adult system has two admission units, Jameson in Sioux Falls for males and the Women's Prison in Pierre for females. Both juvenile facilities are admitting units.
Correctional Health operates much like an ambulatory clinic. Inmates have access to routine care as well as emergency care around the clock. Infirmaries are located at Jameson in Sioux Falls, Durfee in Springfield, and the Women's Prison in Pierre. Staff nurses are responsible for noting orders, sick call, medical treatments, drawing lab, IV therapy, emergency care, and passing medications.
Comfort care rooms are located at Jameson in Sioux Falls and Durfee in Springfield to care for inmates who are terminally ill. A multi-disciplinary team with staff from the Department of Corrections, nursing, mental health, and clergy participate in the patient’s care.
