South Dakota Diabetes Statistics

Prevalence of Diabetes in South Dakota Adults

In 2007, 6.7% of South Dakotans over the age of 17 had been told they have type 1 or type 2 diabetes (Source: Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). Using the US Census Bureau's State and County QuickFacts estimate, that translates to about 39,344 South Dakotans over the age of 17 with diagnosed diabetes. Analysis from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates approximately 25% of people with diabetes do not know they have it – an additional 13,115 South Dakota adults with undiagnosed diabetes.

Prevalence of Diabetes in South Dakotans Under 18

Also in 2007, BRFSS showed a prevalence of 0.5% of children and adolescents ages 0-17 with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Using the US Census Bureau's State and County QuickFacts (quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/46000.html) calculations showing SD with 194,698 residents under 18, about 973 South Dakotans under 18 have type 1 or type 2 diabetes.

Prevalence of Pre-diabetes in South Dakota

According to analysis by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 25.9% of U.S. adults aged 20 years or older, 57 million Americans, had pre-diabetes in 2007 (National Diabetes Fact Sheet, 2007).  Applying this analysis to South Dakota shows about 149,250 South Dakotans had pre-diabetes 2007.
