HIV/AIDS Prevention Community Planning

The HIV Prevention Planning Group is the official HIV community planning group for the state of South Dakota, as mandated by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Community planning is a collaborative process through which the Department of Health works with community planning groups to design local prevention plans that best represent the prevention needs of communities at risk for or already infected with HIV. HIV community planning should be driven by scientific evidence and data as well as community values and insights.

The CDC has established three major goals which provide an overall direction for HIV Prevention Community Planning:

Community planning began in South Dakota in 1994 with the goal of strengthening and improving existing HIV prevention efforts and identifying priority populations and activities through a participatory process that incorporates the views and perspectives of affected persons and providers of services. Participants inform, shape, and assist in the development of the South Dakota Comprehensive Plan for HIV Prevention.
