Getting a South Dakota Campground License

Step 1 — Campground Licensing Packet

Download the following materials (use ADOBE for applications and questionnaire) or call the Office of Health Protection at 605-773-4945 to request a packet.

NOTE: If you are seeking a temporary campground license for a temporary event, use the Temporary Campground License Application (Administrative Rules of South Dakota 44:02:12).

Step 2 — Requirements

A. Under South Dakota Codified Law 34-18-23, establishments must notify the department of construction and alteration projects.

B. 30 days before construction begins, establishments must submit a scaled drawing of the campground to the Office of Health Protection (recommended scale 1/8 " = 1 foot).

C. Complete plan review questionnaire (use ADOBE) and submit it with the plan to:

D. If the establishment uses private sewer or water systems, they must be approved by the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources, 605-773-3351.

E. Complete, notarize, and submit the license/registration application with correct fee 30 days before completion of construction to:

Step 3 — Review

A. Department staff review the layout plan and plan review questionnaire.

B. The Department will send written notification regarding approval or changes required.

C. The Department will approve the campground plan once it is determined to be in compliance with Administrative Rules of South Dakota 44:02:09 - 44:02:12.

Step 4 — Inspection

During the construction process and prior to the business opening, the department will conduct an onsite inspection to determine compliance with administrative rules.

Step 5 — Approval for Licensing

The department will issue a campground license once the license application is made, plan review is completed, and a final inspection made to determine compliance.
